Mentoring Groups

“Mentoring is a relationship experience
in which one person empowers the other by sharing God-given resources.”

What is a Bridge of Hope (BOH) mentoring group?

Bridge of Hope Saint Joseph County (BOHSJC) pairs one mother and her children with one professionally trained mentoring group of 8-12 members from a local church.  Mentoring is a ministry of friendship to the family being served.  The mentors call the woman once a week just to chat and stay connected, initiate one-on-one activities like going out to coffee, grocery shopping or movie nights, and attend monthly Bridge of Hope nights.  These nights provide time for the whole mentoring group and the family to interact as well as provide ongoing training and support for the mentors.

Who makes up a group?

A mentoring group is made up of 8-12 committed mentors from one church.  These mentors will stay committed to the family being served for 12-24 months as they continue through the BOH process to stability.

How will I/we be supported?

Mentoring groups initially receive 4 1/2 hours of training from BOHSJC.  They receive ongoing support from BOHSJC’s trained professional staff.   They also receive support and additional training at the monthly Bridge of Hope nights.  There is always BOHSJC staff available and ready to answer any questions, review concerns and offer assistance.

How much time is involved?

Mentoring is called a ministry of friendship because relationships are created that last a lifetime.  Mentors are only required to commit for 12-24 months, but the hope is that lifelong friendships will evolve.  The commitment of a mentor should never be overwhelming.  Professional staff are always available to help mentors and families maintain a friendly balance.

What’s the process … the high-level steps?

  • The mentor group is trained.
  • Coordinator positions are selected by the mentors according to the family’s needs.  Roles might include: group coordinator, housing coordinator, furnishings coordinator, moving coordinator, movers, transportation coordinator, childcare coordinator, prayer coordinator, parenting partner, meal providers, social coordinator and pen pals.
  • Beyond the basic needs of the family on a daily basis, BOHSJC staff and members as well as the family will also be praying together for the family’s needs and support.
